Xbox 720 launch date set for April 26?

Author: Unknown // Category:

We could be seeing the Xbox 720 as soon as April 26, if a tweet from the Associate Editor of gaming specialist CVG is to be believed.

Rob Crossley cites a “trusted source” claiming that the next-generation Xbox 720 launch event is due to occur on April 26, backing up other April reveal rumours.

“The next Xbox event is scheduled for April 26th, I’ve been told by someone I trust. Microsoft may change date, obvs, but diarise tentatively,” tweeted Crossley.

Said to be caught off guard by the recent Sony PS4 reveal last week, Microsoft could be changing its launch plans for its next-gen console.

Supposedly, an events company linked to Microsoft snapped up the domain name “XboxEvent.com”, leading to further speculation about an upcoming Xbox 720 launch.

Microsoft has also been quietly gathering up domain names linked to “Xbox Gold” in past weeks, including XboxGold.org, Xbox-Gold.com, and web addresses like XboxGold.cn, XboxGold.eu, XboxGold.au and XboxGold.asia. Understandably, this has sparked the rumours that the next Xbox console could be called Xbox Gold, but it could just be Microsoft protecting the brand of its online gaming service, Xbox Live Gold.

Xbox 720 Rumours
Like the Sony PS4, the next-gen Xbox is due to hit stores come this year’s Christmas period, but Microsoft has been tight lipped about what the upcoming console will offer its fans.

According to alleged leaked patent filings, the Xbox 720 will feature an eight-core processor with 8GB of RAM, with a fixed hard drive dissimilar to the modular HDD design used in the Xbox 360.

The latest Xbox 720 rumours suggest the device will feature the newly remodelled Kinect 2 motion gaming peripheral, and two separate CPUs for dedicated gaming and multimedia processing. It could also integrate the long rumoured Xbox TV service as well as 3D technology.

Although Microsoft has yet to offer any confirmation as to the existence of the Xbox 720 console, recent reports suggest the next-gen console will launch alongside new Microsoft Xbox 720 IPs, including an all new entertainment system.

Xbox 720 launch event to see Microsoft unveil EA partnership

Author: Unknown // Category:

Microsoft Xbox
The eagerly awaited Xbox 720 launch eventwill see console manufacturer Microsoft announce a new exclusive content partnership with EA, latest reports have suggested.

Tipped to follow hot on the heels of bitter rival Sony and the recent PS4 release dateconfirmation, Microsoft has been rumoured to host an Xbox 720 release dateannouncement on April 26, an event that will reportedly see the computer giant unveil a new EA partnership.

Whilst it is currently unclear what the terms of the exclusivity partnership will be, gaming outlet CVG has cited “two sources who wished to remain anonymous,” in suggesting that “EA has secured a partnership with the Xbox firm.” It is claimed that this partnership will see the leading developer take to the stage of the Xbox 720 unveiling next month.

Although EA was one of the few top tier publishers not to demonstrate new content alongside the recent unveiled PS4, the Activision, Ubisoft and Capcom rival will support Sony’s next-gen gamer with franchise hits such as FIFA, Madden and Tiger Woods expected to span both current and next-gen console to capitalise on both markets.

Offering speculative insight into the nature of the Xbox 720 EA exclusivity deal, one of the unnamed insider sources has suggested the deal could see the eagerly awaited Battlefield 4 release land solely for Microsoft’s next-generation console.

Adding further backing to the latest EA themed Xbox 720 rumours, Electronics Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen has spoken out on why the company did not showcase any next-gen content during Sony’s recent New York based PS4 launch event.

“It was more about timing of our own slate as well as trying to maintain a good balance of power will all the parties out there and choosing when to unveil certain pieces of software,” Jorgensen said at a recent Mogan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference.

He teasingly added: “I’d say, between now and E3, you are going to see a lot of stuff, and we are going to choose with our marketing teams when to announce.

“At the end of the day we are very excited about Sony’s platform. We feel there’s a huge opportunity there. The technical power on the platform is going to allow us to do a substantial amount of things that have never been done before.”

Speaking on next-gen content, he added: “I have seen the new Battlefield, and it is just stunning. It is amazing what the imagination of the game developers are allowed to do with that much power.”

Android-Based Gaming Console Coming In June, Backers Get Early Access March 28

Author: Unknown // Category:

The world’s first Android-based gaming console, Ouya, started life as an overwhelmingly successful Kickstartercampaign. Since then, the Ouya team has been busy adding support for new content and new devices, like Ethernet and XMBC support. Last month, the Ouya team announced that they’ll begin shipping the first consoles to Kickstarter backers on March 28, with a full launch slated for June.

Now, Ouya is saying they’ll also be throwing a party on March 28 to help celebrate the release of the first Android-based consoles into the wild.

Only those who backed Ouya last summer will be allowed entrance into this swank West Coast shindig, however. According to IGN, The party will be held at the Bay Area offices of fuseproject, a company founded by Yves Behar, the designer of Ouya.

Ouya quickly tore through it’s Kickstarter campaign in July last year, earning $8.5 million by the time the buzzer sounded just a month later. Excitement for the product was so high that the team blew past their $950,000 goal, raising over $1 million in the first day alone.

“Parts are in the factory and assembly lines are buzzing. We’ll gradually ramp up production as we make sure things are working,” reads the official blog post which notes that “tens of thousands” of early adopters will be ready to play games right away.

When production goes into full force in June, Ouyas will be available in Best Buy, GameStop and Target stores. The company is also taking pre-orders on their Website, though Kickstarter backers will be receiving their consoles first, rightfully so.

Ouya has also signed up more than 500 games which will be available for the Android-based console. These games cover a wide variety of genres and will be developed by independent and well-known game makers alike. NAMCO and Square Enix, for instance, have committed to writing games for the console. So too has Adam Saltsman (of Canabalt fame) and the developers from Tripwire Interactive.

The Ouya console is indeed quite a bit different from any other console ever made, from its tiny size and open architecture (the startup encourages hacking) to it’s streaming content and game store.

For instance, one of the key aspects of Ouya is the amount of free and free-to-try games. Every game will be free-to-try; gamers only pay for games they already enjoy, which is much better than renting a game first, then buying it after.

Ouya has also partnered with content providers such as VEVO, iheartradio, TuneIn, Plex, and XBMC. Each of these services will be up and ready to roll when the new consoles arrive later this month.

Finally, Ouya’s size and price are what differentiate the Android-based console from any other. The new SonyPlayStation 4 or Xbox 720 (if that’s what it will be called) are likely to be much larger and much more expensive than the Ouya’s tiny, cup-shaped design.

It’s for these reasons and more that much of today’s gaming has moved from the console and television to mobile and the web. Ouya plans to bring these games back to the livingroom, and with an open platform, no licensing fees and a vibrant community, it very well could be able to.

Facebook Graph Search Review: How it Works

Author: Unknown // Category:
What Is Graph Search?

Graph Search is Facebook’s latest revision to the search feature that helps users find connections to people and places that have always existed in the graph.

In a sense, it’s a clean interface into the breadth of Facebook data that people have entered into Facebook, but contextualized to each user.

Walkthrough of Facebook Graph Search

Let’s start with a search about one of my favorite foods—bacon!

In the screenshot below, you can see a search for “bacon” in the old Facebook search format. Search results provide a listing of Pages, People and Places with the search term “bacon.”

A search query for “bacon” in the existing, original Facebook Search format.

This is helpful if you’re looking for something that includes “bacon” in the title of the Page, a person/profile or a place. But it doesn’t give you any insight into all of the other places on Facebook where there may be relevant social context to bacon. Who likes it? Who has commented on it? What else can the social graph tell us about friends and bacon? The original Facebook search does nothing for you if you want to know these things.

This is dumb search, in essence, not unlike what we experienced with the first search engines in the late 1990s.
Facebook’s Graph Search

Now let’s walk through a Graph Search for bacon. Here’s what you see when you use a semantic search for “bacon” on Facebook.

Facebook Graph Search results for “bacon.”

Note that I’m provided with suggestions related to the search term I’ve entered. You can get to the Facebook Page for bacon, the Interest, the People who like bacon, My Friends who like bacon, photos of bacon, web searches of bacon and bacon wrapped water chestnuts.

Who knew?

To navigate to one of the semantic search options, you can use the tab key to go a level deeper to find the people or Pages that you want.

This is really Facebook’s first foray into what is known as semantic search. Put simply, semantic search is a concept referring to technologies that make a search respond to what the user enters to try to better understand what the user wants to know.

Think of it as interaction between the search technology and the user to provide better search results. Search engines have done this for several years now when they fill out your search box for you and provide suggested keywords. It’s employing technology to get you closer to your answer without your direct intervention.

Semantic search is a relatively new technology, so you have to accept this as an ongoing evolution and not a revolution. Semantic search is getting better every day, but has a long way to go to be precise based on your interests and behaviors.
Search for Facebook Interest Pages

Here’s a look at the bacon Interest Page to see if there are any changes. Sure enough, there are. You get additional information on the interest provided byWikipedia. OK, that’s useful.

Screenshot of the bacon Interest Page.

Additionally, you can immediately see who among my friends likes bacon, as well as photos that are captioned with the word bacon. This was discoverable before, but not nearly as easily. Overall, the Interest Page layout is different and improved in order to make social context clearer to the user.

You may notice as well that at the top of the screen, the URL carries a ?sid=0.002…code. The implication here is that Facebook is tracking how people use Graph Search in order to improve the product.

Note the code at the end of the URL for this search.

Additionally, the Interest Page includes posts by friends about bacon and Related Pages, which are in the screenshot below. It’s interesting that these posts are not individually mined by Facebook and made searchable, although I suspect that’s a forthcoming feature for Facebook’s Graph Search.

Finally, wistful posts from my friends about bacon. People just love bacon.
Search with the “Friends Who Like” Option

Continuing on in the semantic search, there’s an option in the Search Bar for “My Friends who like bacon.”

In the screenshot below, you’ll see a long list of my surely cholesterol-challengedFriends who like bacon.

My friends who like bacon, provided by Facebook’s Graph Search.

You’ll see a long list with the ability to refine your search on the right side of the screen. This appears to be sorted by the number of friends and subscribers for these items.

At the top of the list is Brian Carter, a fellow author and speaker. Interesting that I don’t interact with him all that much, but he’s at the top of my list. I’d have expected this to be sorted by the number of interactions we’ve had rather than social reach. But that’s something Facebook can tweak later.

In the right-hand sidebar, you can narrow your search further to find specifically who you’re looking for. Additionally, at the bottom right of the screen is a link to “More Pages they like.”

Curiosity kills me, so I decide to take a gander at that one. Not a lot of surprises here. As you can see, I have supportive friends who like my book, Austin, eating healthy and technology. Yep. Sounds about right.

This is a handy tool to identify Pages you should like. Interestingly, these are not sorted by the number of Page likes, but rather the number of friends who like each Page.

Pages liked by my male friends who also like bacon.

If I go back to the top of the screen and click the search box, I get another level of friends who enjoy bacon. Now Facebook’s semantic search technology combines your groups and affiliations with your search term, in this case “bacon.” Presumably this is to give you the best opportunity to find people with intersecting interests and commonalities. Clever.

I use the feature to find a friend or two in each category. I wouldn’t necessarily call this “intelligent,” but if it were hooked up to Siri on my iPhone, I’d be simultaneously amazed and creeped out by now.

Next level of Facebook’s semantic Graph Search—suggesting I look at people from my groups and past affiliations who also like bacon.

In the “bacon” search results in the image below, you’ll notice “Photos of Bacon.” When you click the search box here, you are again presented with additional semantic options. In this case it’s “Photos of Bacon taken in Austin, Texas.”

Facebook’s Graph Search providing another level of semantic context beyond Photos of Bacon.

This is designed to get you closer to the search result you want. It reads from your profile to see your location. In this case I’m in Austin, TX and Graph Search tries to match your search term to something that is likely relevant to you.

There are not a lot of options here for this semantic search of Photos of Bacon, but remember this is a new technology that will improve over time and will include more data as time goes on.
Search to Find a Local Business

Are you hungry for lunch and craving a hot dog? Let’s use Facebook to find something.

A search for “hot dogs” gives the following results:
A Facebook Page for a local Austin restaurant
A restaurant in Lesage, WV
The Place Page
The Hot Dogs Interest Page
Hot Dogs from Baja California

A search for “hot dogs” yields disappointing local results.

It’s curious why these particular search results for “hot dogs” come up, and none of the thousands of other places between Austin and Lesage, WV. Do hot dog restaurants not market themselves on Facebook? Doubtful. And if you’re a marketer for a company selling hot dogs, how do you get on this list? Can you even break into Graph Search?

I’m surprised that chains that sell hot dogs, such as Sonic or Dairy Queen, are not listed here while Hillbilly Hot Dogs is. This isn’t terribly impressive, but I’ll chalk this up to necessary cleanup for the Graph Search beta.

Let’s investigate the only viable option for me here—Frank Hot Dogs. The first thing that jumps out is the redesigned Facebook Page that really looks more like a Yelp orGoogle local business listing. Address, website and map are all prominently displayed, as is the social context of my friend who likes Frank.

Frank Hot Dogs in Austin, TX.

Below the fold is also a listing of other local businesses near Frank, where you can presumably walk off your lunch. Notice in the image below that the listings in the “Places Near Frank” are sorted by the number of likes each local business has.

It’s interesting that social proof (in the form of a like) is used to build out your choices, even though Frank is in downtown Austin and is surrounded by other options.

Places near Frank Hot Dogs.
Search for Hot Topics and What Friends Are Saying

One final scenario here—let’s look at how Graph Search can help us find conversations on Facebook that would interest us.

Apple has been in the news a lot lately with earnings announcements, popular products and conjecture about the company as a stock investment.

Here’s what Facebook has to offer for a search of “Apple”: an Interest, a Sponsored app (interesting), Applebee’s, Apple for Education (?), the Apple Store and Apple as a Place.

Here’s a Graph Search for “Apple.”

When you click Apple, Inc., you get a new set of semantic results. This is significantly better—as I have friends who work at Apple, I was expecting to see that. But it’s several levels down and requires you to go through several steps to find it.

So usability is an issue, and in the efforts to create something “semantic,” Facebook might have made it somewhat difficult to navigate, at least today.

Also note that there is no mention of status updates or comments that people have made about Apple. I’d really like to see that in one place.

You need to go through several steps before you find out what your friends are saying about Apple.

Facebook Graph Search—What Do We Know?

1. It’s a better interface into a lot of data that we’ve been able to access for a while. Facebook is making it easier and is using it to help users discover commonalities with friends and discover places to visit.

2. In several places, results show that Page likes are a proxy for “wisdom of the crowd,” and are given preferential treatment over those not as fortunate. This is important for marketers—Facebook considers likes to be valuable social validation and a driver for recommendations. Contrast that to Yelp, where a large number of positive reviews are considered to be premium social capital.

3. It’s clear that Facebook regards Pages with more fans to be more important than those without. Watch for this trend to continue and for Facebook to make social search more data-driven.

4. Page likes are “link-building” in the context of Facebook. Today you have tooptimize your content for feedback to show up in the news feed, but that could very well extend to mobile devices and social search on Facebook and possibly beyond.

5. Brand-building is going to be tougher in a few years than it is today. It will only get harder over time, so there’s a case to be made for action to be taken now to build an active and engaged audience on Facebook while it is relatively inexpensive and easy.

6. Status update and comment content is largely untapped as a data resource in this version of Graph Search. It’s a huge opportunity that will certainly make Graph Search a richer experience for users.

7. For businesses seeking leads and customers, Facebook is taking its first steps to capture and calculate how its local listings and discoverability features result in sales. Attributing Facebook actions to more leads, sales and profit is an important theme for Facebook moving forward. Graph Search can and will ultimately help with that.

8. Finally, any person who changes privacy settings to Private is going to be largely undiscoverable in Graph Search. That may not be a big deal today, but could become one as Graph Search becomes a richer and more important part of the Facebook experience.

Summary

Facebook has taken the next step in evolving beyond social into social-driven search. Is it going to replace Google anytime soon? No, but that isn’t the question to ask today. Facebook is taking steps to make social relevant in the context of search—and that’s a long-term project.

This first version is promising, but has a long way to go to meet its full potential.

The takeaway for marketers is that the basics really haven’t changed significantly. You need to host a thriving and growing community on Facebook to take full advantage of how the industry evolves. You need more fans, more comments and more social engagement. That’s always been the case. But we haven’t known where the industry is heading necessarily.

Graph Search is a window into the future, but a largely unrealized vision today that will take time to emerge. Think about how Facebook will improve the overall user experience using data in the Graph in the future.

Budget iPhone expected to use iPhone 5 Retina display

Author: Unknown // Category:

If there’s one thing that Apple is good at it’s retaining large profit margins on the hardware it ships. And that’s certainly the case for the iPhone. But with Apple expected to rollout a budget iPhone soon in a bid to expand its market, some components have got to change. However, the display doesn’t look to be on of them.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a known reliable source for Apple hardware predictions, has stated that the budget iPhone will use the same 4-inch panel found in the iPhone 5. What will change, though, is the phone casing, which is set to be a mix of plastic and glass fiber. We can also expect the smartphone to be a lot more colorful, with a prediction it will come in a number of colors (up to 6) just like the iPod range.

What’s interesting is that Apple has apparently been planning a budget iPhone since 2011, and it will finally arrive this year. This also begs the question of whether or not Apple will purposefully make theiPhone 5S look different to distinguish it from the cheaper version? That seems unlikely as ‘S’ model iPhones typically don’t change in appearance over the previous model. So you’ll likely only be able to tell up close and by holding both phones.

While other manufacturers are pushing for larger displays in handsets, the iPhone 5/S is going to look comparatively small by the time we get 2014 and the inevitable iPhone 6. At that point, if a budget iPhone has been on the market several months, Apple may choose to split the two handsets–making the premium model available with a larger display while retaining the 4-inch display for budget model.

Saints Row 4 debut teaser trailer

Author: Unknown // Category:

If you were wondering how Volition would handle the Saints Row series after THQ had to sell the developer because it went under, this debut teaser for the next installment in the series, Saints Row 4, should give you a pretty good idea. Basically, it will be more insane than the series already is.

Rather than a pseudo-parody of Grand Theft Auto, SR4 is looking to remove that “pseudo” and go from parody to “whatever crazy thing we can fit on disc.” Aside from perhaps a similar graphical style, you wouldn’t know this is SR just by watching the beginning of the teaser — until the words ”Saints Row” are spelled out a couple of times.

There are super powers; characters shoot energy blasts, run at extraordinary speed while their legs crackle with electricity, and fly through the cityscape. It does, however, devolve into the Saints Rowyou know and love. There are a few shots of a BDSM-clad dominatrix, a dude’s wang covered by a black censor bar that is tactfully swinging along with the wang, and a shirtless man surfing on top of a moving car.

If that weren’t enough, a cop’s eyes bug out of his head like he’s a cartoon wolf that just saw a pretty lady walk by, and then a giant, sentient energy drink can demolishes a city as if it were Godzilla.

Saints Row has been wacky for a while — with big, purple sex toys receiving focus as many players’ main weapon in SR3 — but who even knows what in the world is going on in SR4? We can only hope that the sentient beverage can is a primary focus of the new game’s story arc, which we in turn hope is character-driven.

We’ll all get to see how Volition handles working under new management when Saints Row 4 drops on August 20 this year.

Dell XPS 18 review: first look

Author: Unknown // Category:

The Dell XPS 18 joins the Asus Transformer AiO and the Sony VAIO Tap 20 in the growing portable all-in-one market, and Dell reckons it has the march on its rivals – the XPS is both slimmer and lighter than its competitors.

The XPS 18 is around 20mm thick, and it weighs 2.1kg – making it 300g lighter than the Asus, and less than half as hefty as Sony’s 5.1kg VAIO. That’s especially impressive considering a battery has been crammed in too - if the XPS 18 can live up to Dell’s claims of five-hour battery life, it will double the Sony’s longevity.

Like the AiO, the XPS can be fully detached from its stand. Dell has fitted a couple of kickstands to the rear so the XPS can be propped up at a couple of different angles when it’s away from its base, and it uses a magnetic connection to re-dock with the stand when you return the device to its desk. Dell’s pre-production sample sees the Windows button and company logo in the wrong positions, but we’re assured this will be fixed by the time the XPS 18 launches.

The good-looking Dell follows the XPS blueprint with a glossy black bezel and dark matte plastic, and it’s a sturdy bit of kit – there was barely any give across the rear panel.

The Dell outdoes the Sony’s 1,600 x 900 panel with a 1,920 x 1,080 touchscreen, and we had few complaints about its brightness or quality during our short time with the AiO. Dell has ensured its machine will stand up to the rigours of home use by using Gorilla Glass, although the company’s representatives couldn’t confirm if it was the first or second version used.

Under the hood, several specifications will be available: the base model will use a dual-core Pentium processor, but high-end machines will run with Core i7s. They’ll all use Intel’s HD Graphics 4000 core, and storage duties will be handled by hard disks or SSDs.

The model we tested used an Intel Core i5-3337U – a low-power Ivy Bridge chip running at 1.8GHz – alongside 8GB of RAM. This should be enough to make Windows 8 feel snappy, but that wasn’t the case on the XPS 18: Windows 8’s homescreen and app store were sluggish to navigate, and there was even lag when opening basic Explorer windows in Desktop mode. We hope Dell will fix these issues with driver updates before release.

The left- and right-hand sides are home to speakers that pumped out good-quality sound, and there are two USB 3 ports. Dell includes a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse in the box, and the stand itself is impressively versatile, tilting forwards to a vertical base and upwards to a horizontal position.

Dell says the XPS 18 will hit stores on 16 April, with prices starting at £849 inc VAT – so that’s less cash than the VAIO for a higher-resolution screen inside a lighter device. Dell reckons the XPS 18 could be “the primary device in the house” – do you agree?

How to Boot Into Linux from Your Android Phone

Author: Unknown // Category:

How to Boot Into Linux from Your Android Phone
Android (Rooted): Whether you're troubleshooting a problematic PC or you just prefer working in your own OS with your own tools, keeping a Linux boot CD or USB key is a great way to take a customized system with you anywhere you go. With DriveDroid, you don't need to bother with media, and can use the gadget you carry with you all the time anyway: Your Android phone.

DriveDroid will, once connected to your PC, boot your computer to any ISO file or IMG disk image that's stored on your Android phone. Whether you just like working in Linux whenever possible but find yourself using other systems with other OSes installed already, or you like the idea of keeping a rescue disc on your smartphone instead of on optical media, this handy app can help.

Before you install, make sure you have plenty of room on your Android phone—you'll need the space for the Linux distro that you plan to download, and for any USB drive images you want to create for storage or for portable tools you'll need while your computer is booted in Linux. Once you have some space cleared, here's how the app works:
Connect your phone to your PC via USB
Open DriveDroid and Select the Linux distro that you'd like to run. You can choose from the 35MB SliTaz (which the developer recommends because its so small), or more popular distros like Arch Linux, Gentoo, Crunchbang, FreeBSD, and more.
Once downloaded, select the distro you'd like DriveDroid to host, and enable it.
Reboot your PC. If you haven't already, make sure your BIOS is set to boot to USB devices before booting from the hard drive.

That's all there is to it. If you have your own ISO or IMG file that you'd like to boot, whether it's Linux or Windows, you can use that image instead as long as it fits on your phone. Just copy the image over to your phone and drop it into the DriveDroid folder so the app can see it. Then select it when you open the app, and reboot your PC.

How they work: Computer/Gaming glasses

Author: Unknown // Category:

Is it technology, or voodoo? Computer glasses have been around for a few years now, and seem to be catching on. Do those tinted lenses really work, or is it a bunch of marketing nonsense? There is a quite a bit of science backing it up, and the difference is palpable. The folks at Gunnars, who are really unparalleled in this eyewear genre, were kind enough to send over a pair for me to test out. After wearing them for a few weeks, I’m a bit surprised.

We’re not going to stop looking at screens and monitors, so we should probably find a way to reduce eye fatigue. You know it, I know it… we do this for far too long each day. We game or work for hours, and our eyes are throbbing by the end of it all. Then, we have to wake up and do it all again tomorrow.

Lenses

The lenses are critical to any eyewear, and a good pair of computer glasses don’t disappoint. The lenses are made to create what is defined as a “microclimate” around your eyes. They’re angled and shaped in such a way as to prevent unnecessary airflow from entering the space between your eye and the lens. The meaning of that is to create humidity, and help to prevent your eyes from drying out. Dry eyes mean blinking, and blinking means stress on those tiny little eye muscles.

The shape of the lens is also meant to deflect light. When we look at monitors close-up, our eye muscles flex to take it in. This extended period of flexion in the muscles causes strain. The shape of the lenses refracts light into the eye, meaning your muscles can relax. Try flexing your arm for long periods of time. After a while, it starts to hurt, especially after you relax the arm. Eye muscles are no different.

Tint

The amber tint on computer glasses is another very important factor to reducing strain. Maybe the yellow-ish tint is cause for suspicion, but it has a purpose. Turns out those high-powered monitors are not as awesome for our eyes as we might think.

All that high energy light emanating from your screen can be damaging over a long period of time. We tend to spend extended periods of time glaring at our games or work, so we’re taking in a lot of unnatural light. Overhead fluorescent lighting, multiple screens, lots of stuff to be done… it’s madness!

The amber tint is meant to soften the harsh coloration, all while increasing our perceived contrast. In doing so, our eyes can recover quickly during change, like navigating between different screens or pages on the same screen. The lens material is also optically pure, meaning there is no distortion on light deflection.
Frames

The theme of the day is reducing fatigue, and frames play a surprisingly big role in that. The frames are usually made of a very thin, light metal that almost disappears when you put them on. The weight of something sitting on my face was a concern for me, since I don’t wear glasses at all. Reducing fatigue and strain is the goal, and the frames do a fabulous job in the overall experience. While light, they’re not fragile or delicate.

Do they work?

When you first put a pair on, the amber tint may strike you as odd. Though after wearing them for a bit, that won’t be an issue at all. The tint may be surprising, but that may also be because you’re looking for it.

The goal of computer glasses is to reduce eye fatigue, which also reduces overall fatigue. If you’re spending long hours looking at screens, then a pair of computer glasses is probably something you should consider. The concept may be foreign to some, but the science works.

A recent independent study of computer glasses, with 100 participants, yielded some interesting results. All 100 participants reported easier viewing, with 96 people reporting reduced eye strain. An impressive 80 participants reported their eyes were just plain less tired while wearing them.
The experience

Computer glasses have an amber tint, meant to soften colors, but they don’t diminish the overall viewing experience. Colors are softened, not changed. The amber tint definitely alters things, but not greatly. It also tends to magnify things a bit, so the viewing experience can be enhanced in that respect.

Conclusion

The claims aren’t false… Gunnars work. If you’re going to be staring at a monitor for an hour or more, and it’s a recurring part of your life, I’d suggest checking them out. The science is legitimate, even if it’s a new concept to you. I was pretty skeptical at first, but have been pleasantly surprised by the experience. My eyes really do feel less fatigued during normal amounts of use, and wearing them (especially for someone who doesn’t wear glasses) has been less intrusive than I thought.

We stare at monitors and screens almost constantly, and that’s cause for concern to our eyes. Eye strain can cause a myriad of concerns over time, and those problems can be hard (or impossible) to reverse. If you wear glasses already, there is an option for prescription lenses, or a different tint for those who need truer colors on their monitor.

If you’re on the fence about trying them, some Best Buy locations have try-on pairs of the gaming glasses. Give them a shot, maybe pick up a pair. Over the course of a few days and weeks, you’ll start to notice it more when you don’t wear them, which is the true hallmark of a successful product.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag preview

Author: Unknown // Category:

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, on the surface, looks like Ubisoft’s response to the two major points players and critics raised about Assassin’s Creed 3. While last year’s game received generally positive reviews, it was slammed for its po-faced protagonist, Connor Kenway, and for its lack of innovation, mechanically and structurally speaking.
One of the only things audiences gave Assassin’s Creed 3 props for, beyond its expected strengths, were the sections set at sea where players had to pilot a galley and use its cannons to send enemies to Davy Jones’s Locker.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag: Plot

Well, players can prepare to say goodbye to Connor Kenway and hello to the open sea. Both AC3’s stoic protagonist and the pre-colonial American Frontier are now gone and the latest game in the series will be set in the Golden Age of Piracy.
At a recent event in London, Ubisoft revealed that the timeline for their new game kicks off around the 1720s during the post-Spanish Succession period. A lot of privateers and sailors at the time, we are told, suddenly found themselves out of work and began to turn to piracy in order to make a living.

Among them was one privateer named Edward Kenway, a brash, brutish, if slightly intelligent man who captained a ship called The Jackdaw. It’s this colourful rogue the players will be taking control of as they head out on adventure that’ll take them from Cuba, to the West Indies, to the Bahamas and dozens of places in between.
According to Ubisoft, there are 50 unique locations in the game, which include three large open cities – Havana, Kingston and the Pirate Republic of Nassau –, fishing villages, secret coves, jungles, forts, Mayan ruins, islands and more. They’ll even be able to use a diving bell to explore the ocean floor.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag: Characters

Of course, fans of the series will note that Black Flag’s protagonist has the same last name as the half-British/half-Native American hero from Assassin’s Creed 3.
It turns out that Edward Kenway is Connor’s grandfather, who also joined the order of assassin’s in their fight against the Templars. Black Flag, Ubisoft said, will also not feature Desmond, the future protagonist of the series, so Edward is obviously not part of his bloodline.

Ubisoft said, however, that Black Flag will also feature a lot of figures from the Golden Age of Piracy including Ben Hornigold, the gentlemen pirate, Anne Bonney, one of the rare female captains of the time, Calico Jack and Charles Vane, a pair of unrepentant psychos and Blackbeard, who needs no introduction.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag: Features

At the centre of everything, though, stands Ed Kenway and his progression through the ranks of the League of Assassins. The two trailers shown at the Ubisoft’s London event reveal that players will, naturally, spend some time traversing rooftops, assassinating bad guys and engaging in swordplay with crowds of enemies.
Ubisoft said, however that Black Flag will feature the deepest gameplay the AC series has seen to date.

Players will obviously take control of Kenway’s ship, The Jackdaw, in the game, and will be able to customise it to some degree. There are a raft of new activities including naval battles – featuring boarding party battles –, treasure and whale hunting and deep sea diving. Ubisoft says many of the new activities will push players to explore the deep and rich world they’ve created.

Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag: Verdict

What’s even more impressive, is the fact that Black Flag is scheduled for release this year – a turnaround time from AC3 that seems miniscule given the scope and breadth of what Ubisoft hope to accomplish with the game.
It’s certainly a new step for the series, gameplay wise, and like every Assassin’s Creed game, it looks absolutely gorgeous. We can’t wait to buckle a swash with Black Flag come this autumn.29 October 2013

iPhone 6: Release date, rumours, features and news

Author: Unknown // Category:

Here you'll find all the latest news on the iPhone 6 release date, the rumours, upcoming features and of course specs on the eagerly anticipated iPhone update
The Apple iPhone 6 is probably the most hotly anticipated upcoming gadget on the planet – and if it isn’t probably one of its larger screened siblings theiPad 5 or iPad Mini 2 is.

The tech world is always looking for the next big thing, and so is particularly well primed for the flurry of rumour and speculation that precedes big product launches.

And Apple’s policy of zero information prior to actually launching the product, rather than starving the rumour camp fire of oxygen, the mystery seems to act as petroleum.

As such, tips, speculation and murmurings as to what the iPhone 6 will be started to appear almost as soon as the iPhone 5 was launched. Some industry punts are so specific as to raise serious eyebrows – once predicts not only that a cheaper iPhone will be launched, but that we’ll see it in May, and that by the end of the year it will sell 53 million units.

While the analyst in question will certainly be on for a big win at the bookies if that particular bet comes in, we bring you a round up of some of the other seemingly logical rumours.
Apple iPhone budget device

Alongside a full fat iPhone 6, there are rumblings that Apple will launch a budget iPhone - possibly called the iPhone 5s - which will revert back to the plastic chassis found on the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS.

While this would go against the somewhat ‘premium’ pricing model of Apple products, a DigiTimes reports that sources within the upstream supply chain have confirmed that Apple is in the process of sourcing the plastic parts needed for a budget iPhone including a chassis.

In a recent earnings call CEO Tim Cook made the fair point that taking any particular bit of data relating to a supply chain of a big firm like Apple won’t necessarily tell you much about the bigger picture. However he then also blurted out, when asked about the possibility of cheaper iPhones – “We’ve had a great track record on iPod of offering different products at different price points.” – which many have taken to mean confirmation they’re working on one.
Apple iPhone 6 screen

Many saw the increased 4-inch screen size on the iPhone 5 as a move on Apple’s part to keep up with the screen sizes of the larger Android powered phones. However now 5-inches is more like the premium screen size right now – so you might see Apple making a move in that direction

Some reports suggest that Apple may launch phones with different sized screens, which would come in a range of colours – which would be another departure from what we’ve seen before. The prediction comes courtesy of analyst Brian White at Topeka Capital.

If Apple were to release two sized phones – which are being called the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 – Apple may shift to a larger screen size for the latter.

Another analyst told MacRumours that Apple could be looking to implement a 4.8-inch Retina+ IGZO screen made by Sharp, which will make the iPhone display thinner, brighter and much clearer – boasting better than HD resolutions.

According to those inside the manufacturing industry Sharp is working on making its super HD display iPhone-ready – however because the technology is so new it might not even appear on the next generation of tech.

Apple iPhone 6 features

They’ll certainly hardware upgrades to Apple’s next phone, though it’s worth pointing out Apple isn’t usually at the top of the pile when it comes to lining up components alone.

A polycarbonaite body is one of the more frequent mutterings heard flapping through the wind of internet rumours.

Elsewhere, a new top of the range iPhone model would presumably need some sort of decent camera upgrade – as this is an area that’s been particularly busy in smartphones since the last iphone wa launched. The HTC One and Nokia 920 in particular boast interesting new camera features, other than simply megapixel escalation.

A new feature that could well appear on the 6th generation iPhone is the use of sonar as a replacement to the current infared sensors which use sound as a proximity sensor – according to this report in Apple Insider – letting the phone detect where it is, either as a way of alerting the user about an incoming object, or as a way of detecting whether the phone is being held to the users ear.

Apple iPhone 6 release date

One of many analysts claiming to be in the know claims it won’t be ready until 2014. Jefferies analyst Peter Mise said “Apple's iPhone uses a technology called 'in-cell,' which essentially meshes the touch screen with the glass screen into one thin display. Its partners can't get good enough yields making those displays bigger to launch the iPhone 6 this year," the report said. "He thinks the next iPhone will run on a 20 nm processor, allowing it to add more cores, possibly four or eight. To take advantage of the new processing speed, iOS will have to be upgraded. The new iOS architecture might not be ready until 2014."

Whilst others point to a 2013 release. While there’s always a certain internal logic to these things, realistically there’s no way to be sure until Apple send out an invite.
